Tribute to Pascual Aldave at Baluarte

28 february 2025

Euskadiko Orkestra, the Orfeón Pamplonés and the baritone Juan Laboreria will perform today, 28 February, the ‘Basque Rhapsodies No. 3 and No. 4 of the symphonic ballet “Akelarre”, a masterpiece by the composer from Lesaka.

Pascual Aldave is one of the most important symphonists of 20th century Basque music and, coinciding with the centenary of his birth (2024), today the Rhapsodies No. 3 and No. 4 of his work Akelarre, undoubtedly the composer's most ambitious work, will be performed.

The Euskadiko Orkestra, conducted by Łukasz Borowicz, together with the Orfeón Pamplonés and the baritone Juan Laborería, will give life to two of the four rhapsodies that make up this symphonic-burlesque ballet, created in 1986 commissioned by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa to commemorate the centenary of Aita Donostia and Jesús Guridi.

Inspired by texts by Pío Baroja, Akelarre reflects the essence of Aldave's creative universe: his roots in Basque folklore, an advanced language that remains within the tonal sphere with traces of polytonality and a palette of orchestral colours that distinguish him as one of the best symphonists of his generation.

The work has been published for the first time by OE Oficina and is available in our online shop.
